Spotlight Grant
New York Lodge #1 presented our $2000 Spotlight Grant to The Autism Society which services more than 2500 families in both Nassau and Suffolk counties. They provide more than 100 social recreational activities each year so that families affected by autism can get out into the community and become fully participating members.

The table is reserved to honor all those that are missing. White table cloth symbolizes the purity of answering their Call. The Red Rose reminds us of the life of each of those missing. The Bible reminds us of the Faith gained through our strength of all those Lost. The Empty Chair reminds us of those missing. The inverted Glass tells us they can no longer drink from the font of Fellowship.

Celebrating 153 Years
On February 16th, the Elks of New York Lodge No.1 celebrated the 153rd anniversary of the founding of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. Our Exalted Ruler Lisa Moldovan provided a cake to mark the occasion. We at New York Lodge are very proud of our heritage and our accomplishments over the past 153 years. Happy Anniversary BPOE!

Elks Support Our Veterans
The Past Exalted Rulers Association of New York Elks Lodge #1 supports the Lynbrook Village Veterans Parade by purchasing a commemorative bond, The Parade is commemorating the 75th Anniversary of the end of WW II. The Past Exalted Rulers Association members are proud to support such a great cause in memory of all those who have given of themselves. The Benevolent and Protected Order of Elks will never forget our country's great Veterans.

Helping Ruff House Rescue
Some of the donations at our recent Food Drive included pet food. Our member, Kim Stein, volunteers at Ruff House Rescue and delivered our donations to the facility as our Lodge's representative. It looks like one of Kim's friends appreciated our efforts.
January 2021 Food Drive
The COVID pandemic has not slowed New York Lodge's efforts to aid our local communities. Our recent weekend Food Drive yield much-needed donations which will be shared with local food pantries. In addition to the food donations, the Lodge collected $100 in cash donations. While the food drive was under way, our Exalted Ruler Lisa Moldovan, PER served lunch on both Saturday and Sunday raising $300 to benefit the Lodge. Thank you ER Lisa!

Cub Pack 20 recently lost their meeting location so New York Elks stepped up and offered the use of the Lodge to host their meetings. At a recent meeting, the pack held their annual Pine Wood Derby where the Cubs build and race their own cars.

Tribute to Lawrence Contratti, PSP
1944-2020
Lawrence (Larry) Contratti was born in Astoria on January 1, 1944. He held a Bachelor of Arts degree in education from SUNY New Paltz and two Master of Arts degrees from New York University: Modern European History (1968) and Cinema Studies (1973). He taught social studies and English at Syosset High School and retired in 1999 after 32 years in the classroom.
Larry was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, New York Lodge #1 (formerly Lynbrook Lodge #1515). He was Exalted Ruler in lodge year 1986-1987, President of the New York State Elks Association in 2012-2013, and was an Honorary Life Member. Larry was an avid reader and probably read every book ever written about World World II. He enjoyed reading, cinema, and in his earlier years enjoyed Broadway Shows and the ballet. He had an impressive stamp collection. He was a cartoonist and made over 35 hand-drawn comic books during his college years. He was also a newspaper editor, having edited the SUNY New Paltz student newspaper, the Oracle, as well as the New York State Elks newspaper. Larry is remembered by all who knew him as a kindhearted, generous man who was always happy and enjoyed a good chat. His quick wit and offbeat sense of humor will be remembered fondly. Larry is survived by his two children, Larry and Laura, his sister, Irene, his grandchildren, Julie and Lea, and many nephews and nieces. Larry was laid to rest at Mount Saint Mary Cemetery in Flushing, Queens. |

Red Ribbon Week 2020
As part of the Elks Drug Awareness Program, New York Elks Lodge #1 distributed Red Ribbons to several schools in the area. Pictured below with some students at Brooklyn Ave School in Valley Stream are SVP Brian Steckler and District Drug Awareness Chair Anitra Butler, PST. In addition to the red ribbons, Drug Awareness pamphlets and coloring books were given to children in grades K-6.

New York Elks Lodge #1 applied for and received ENF Community Grants under the leadership of our Exalted Ruler Lisa Moldovan. The following grants were presented by the Lodge: $3000 Beacon Grant to Camp Anchor; $2500 Gratitude Grant to Long Island Sled Hockey; $2500 Spotlight Grant to Veterans Health Alliance of Long Island.

The Officers and Members of Lodge #1, under the leadership of Exalted Ruler Lisa Moldovan PER, collected an abundance of food during a recent food drive. There are many locations in need of restocking their food pantries to take care of our local residents. The food donations viewed in the pictures along with cash donations were distributed to three locations: St. Christopher's of Baldwin, St. Raymond's of East Rockaway, and Gural JCC in Cedarhurst.

PDDGER John M. Nuzzi Sr. presented a Certificate of Recognition from the Town of Hempstead to Trustee Chairman Joseph Serafino on behalf of Supervisor Donald X. Clavin and Town Councilman Anthony P. D'Esposito. The Lodge was recognized for continuing to fly our Nation's Flag daily in front of the Lodge. Our thanks go to Secretary Louis Mohr Jr. who ensures that our flag is replaced when weather-beaten and is lowered to half mast when appropriate and later returned to full mast.

Rev. Michael Martine was installed as Grand Chaplain on July 8th by Past Grand Exalted Ruler Malcolm J. McPherson via a Zoom virtual meeting. Father Michael is the pastor of Holy Rosary Parish in Staten Island and is a member of New York Elks Lodge #1. He is also Chaplain of the New York State Elks Association. NY State Senator Todd Kaminsky
New York Elks Lodge #1 has been recognized by NY State Senator Todd Kaminsky for their outstanding efforts in aiding their communities. The Lodge donated thousands of dollars in needed funds, merchandise, and member’s man hours to support area First Responders, and Local Food Pantries. The Proclamation presented by Sen. Kaminsky noted that New York Elks Lodge is the lifeblood of the community and has the membership to support their worthy efforts. The presentation was done prior to the lodge’s first Outdoor Grab N Go Elks Dinner where they served over 70 meals between 6:00 and 8:00 PM. Exalted Ruler Lisa Moldovan and Jean Hunt, wife of PDD Frank T. Hunt, worked in the kitchen. Working outside to set up, serve, and clean up were PDD Frank T. Hunt, DDGER John M. Nuzzi Sr., State VP Brian Steckler, Treasurer & PDD Mark E. Stuparich, Secretary Louis H. Mohr Jr., Trustee Fred Vetter, Esquire & PER Paul Schneller, Leading Knight & PER Amy Schneller, and Inner Guard Ann Roller. We thank the members, families and friends that supported this first Gran-N-Go dinner and for observing social distancing. Our Lady of Peace 8th Grade Graduation
New York Elks Lodge #1 recently donated the use of its parking lot to Our Lady Of Peace School in Lynbrook so they could hold a socially distanced 8th grade graduation. Congratulations to the graduates and good luck in high school.
Flag Day 2020
Due to the restrictions imposed by COVID-19, our Lodge's Annual Flag Day Service was done virtually and broadcast on Facebook Live. Thank you to the Officers for being so flexible. NY Lodge Helps Hospital Workers
Thanks to the donations of our members, New York Lodge #1 recently raised almost $1,400 to buy goodies for the workers at Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital. The Lodge donated four-color pens bringing the total donations to over $1,700. Thank you to all the members who helped prove Elks Care – Elks Share.
Food Drive
Our first lodge event of the year as a non-contact, socially distanced food drive to benefit the Our Lady of Peace food pantry right around the block from the lodge. In honor of Armed Forces Day, handheld flags were given out to all those who made donations. 38 Elks and 4 non-Elks were on hand to collect nonperishable foods to help stock the food pantry. More than 40 boxes and bags of food were donated as well as $75. Special thanks to That No Good Burger Joint in Baldwin for their generous donation.
New York Elks Lodge #1 Remembers Memorial Day 2020
The officers and members of New York Elks Lodge #1 are proud to remember all those that have given their lives for us to make a better tomorrow. We also think of the families that have lost their loved ones. While we have always celebrated these heroes in the past with parades across our County, this year we need to be safe and stay healthy. We have placed flags across our Lodge property to let the community know we are still here even now with our Lodge being closed. We, the members of Lodge Number One, the First Lodge of Elkdom, send a special note to all those families who have lost veterans whom we will not forget. We thank our Exalted Ruler Lisa Moldovan, PER and member Jimmy Taylor for placing American Flags, the Red, White, and Blue, symbol of Unity and Freedom, around the Lodge property on behalf of all our members and nonmembers to cherish and honor this very special day of remembrance.

Via Teleconference and Messenger Video
Due to the restrictions imposed as a result of the Corona virus, the Installation of Officers of New York Lodge No. 1 was conducted by DDGER John Nuzzi via teleconference and Messenger Video.
DDGER John Nuzzi and ER-Elect Lisa Moldovan were connected by Messenger Video. All the other officers were connected on a conference line. Lodge Sponsor Ron Hansen, PDDGER, was the Grand Secretary and Father Michael Martine, NYSEA Chaplain and Past Grand Chaplain, was the Grand Chaplain. After all the officers had taken the oath of office, PDDGER Ron Hansen administered the oath to DDGER John Nuzzi who is the new Lodge Chaplain.
At the invitation of DDGER Nuzzi, the Lodge was honored to have two special guests listening into the installation: PGER David and Penny Carr. PGER Dave offered his thanks to DDGER John and congratulated all the officers of New York Lodge No. 1.

Every April, the members and families of the Elks Lodge in Lynbrook host a show and dinner for disabled veterans from VA hospitals.
The evening offers a home-cooked meal and a variety show for more than 100 veterans who have served in wars dating to WWII through to Afghanistan and Iraq.
"I've been with the show since 1971," says Donald Kolman, of Lynbrook. "I enjoy it as much as they do."
This year's theme is the Sounds of the 70s, featuring classic rock and disco, classic TV theme songs and more.
At the end of the show, the cast sings the anthems of all the military services with a veteran from each branch.

New York Lodge members present, had the honor of watching, enjoying, and participating with all those Special Adults present and enjoyed the use of THE ELKS NATION FOUNDATION, BEACON GRANT. Working in conjunction, the Elks Lodge donated over $2000.00 for the fun filled evening. All the family members present of Camp Anchor and of the Town of Hempstead, along with the volunteers that work on a daily basis with these young adults. This evening celebration was Camp Anchor’s, 2019 February Valentines Dance, and for use as Elks, what Greater way as we close our 150th year Celebration. As we move quickly into the 151st year of The Order of Elks, as well as the existence of New York Elks Lodge #1, the first Lodge of Elkdom. New York Elks, and members present were honored to participate, in this great night of watching all dancing, and enjoying a great meal. There were 150 plus men and women that came out to enjoy the festivities. The Elks were on hand to keep the party going! The D J Party Marty, that had everyone up and dancing!, as well as Photo Booths by Soar that provided fun for all. Everyone was able to play dress-up and take some great souvenir pictures. The Elks present along with volunteers served hot food from Antonio's of Malverne that was delicious, and enjoyed by all. Malverne Pastry Shop's huge 175 pink heart-shaped cookies made everyone feel the Valentine's spirit. The entire cost of the evening was covered by the NY Elks, and Elks National Foundations Beacon Grant. Special thanks, goes out to Mary Ann Hanson, Director of the Anchor Program, and her staff for coordinating the event with the Elks. The Anchor Program answers to the Special Services of our community, through year roundsocial and recreational events. As Elks taking part in events like mentioned above, makes Elks across our Great Country, proud of our organization, and for all our accomplishments over the past 150 years. 150th Anniversary Grant
New York Elks Lodge, its officers and members, is honored to have presented The Elks 150thYear Anniversary Grant of $ 1,500.00 to The Long Island Sled Hockey Team, known as The Long Island Rough Riders. A team organization of Special Athletes with different physical challenges. The team hits the ice on sleds and competes throughout the East Coast. These athletes pay for nothing. The organization is now in its 23 year. Under President Bryan Blomquist, he stands tall for this group of special athletes as a Coach, and Proud Father of a team Athlete, The Team’s Head Coach Phil Derenze, keeps the players shaving the ice and scoring goals from their sleds.

New York Elks Present Gifts of Historic Valve
New York Elks Lodge #1 presented gifts of Elk Memorabilia To New York State President Stuart Rishe. President Rishe received mounted door knob of the first Elks Lodge on Long Island in 1911, Freeport # 1253. Freeport/Baldwin had recently merged with New York #1. Memorabilia was presented to Stuart by Lodge Historian Al Hoffman, PDDGER.
President Rishe also received from the private collection of John M. Nuzzi Sr,. also a Historian of Elkdom, on behalf of the officers and the members of New York Lodge, a fine china plate from the First Lodge of Elkdom.
New York Elks thanks President Stuart for all his visions that lead New York State Elks this past Fraternal Year. Stuart, from the members of New York Elks Lodge #1, Thank You.
